Coventry City are set to make a statement signing, reportedly sealing a £17 million deal for Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi as they bolster their squad for a long-awaited Premier League comeback.
The Sky Blues aim to finalize the transfer before Friday’s season opener against Arsenal, bringing another seasoned attacking threat into Frank Lampard’s ranks.
Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 for £17.2 million, becoming the club’s record signing at the time. The 29-year-old went on to score 23 goals in 103 appearances for Forest.
Yet, the Nigeria international has slipped down the attacking hierarchy behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus and missed out on Forest’s Europa League squad last season.
Awoniyi found opportunities scarce last season, starting only three times but still netting four goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.
His time at Forest also included a serious injury scare in May 2025 when he ruptured his intestine after colliding with a goalpost during a match against Leicester City. He was subsequently placed in an induced coma while receiving treatment. Coventry are gearing up for their first Premier League adventure in 25 years, staying busy in the transfer market as Lampard assembles a squad ready to take on the top flight.
The Sky Blues have already brought Gus Hamer back to the club from Sheffield United, while goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has returned following a successful loan spell from Brighton.
Loum Tchaouna has joined from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda has arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt, while Ghana international midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has been signed from Danish side Nordsjaelland.
Awoniyi’s anticipated arrival could inject much-needed firepower into Coventry’s attack, especially with Haji Wright currently out injured.
With only Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms fit up front, Lampard faces a crucial decision ahead of Friday’s eagerly awaited Premier League opener against Arsenal.
