Coventry City manager Frank Lampard welcomed Ghana international midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, expressing confidence that the highly rated player will become a key contributor to the club.
Yirenkyi made an immediate impact, assisting on his debut as Coventry secured a 2-0 win over AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly.
The 20-year-old joined Coventry from FC Nordsjaelland for a reported club-record fee of $30 million, following a strong performance with Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Lampard stated that Coventry faced strong competition for Yirenkyi, but believes the club’s development plan was instrumental in attracting the midfielder to England.
“We’ve got a belief in Caleb here. He’s a player that we’re happy to have brought to the club because he was well wanted by many clubs probably around Europe. We sold the project to him,” Lampard told the club’s media.
“He’s a good, talented player; he’s young. This boy, we believe, is going to really build his career so [he’s] a big addition to the club. I think we saw signs of that; hopefully we see a lot more,” he added.
Yirenkyi’s promising debut has raised expectations for the new season. Coventry is optimistic he will quickly adapt to English football and become a key member of Lampard’s squad.
The midfielder could make his competitive debut on Friday night when Coventry City face Arsenal in their Premier League opener.
