Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi believes Ghana can qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the team tries to recover from its disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup run.
Now that their World Cup run is over, Ghana is focusing on the AFCON qualifiers starting in September. The Black Stars hope to return to Africa’s top football tournament after missing the last one.
Ati-Zigi, who plays for St. Gallen, thinks the current squad has the talent and determination to qualify for the tournament, which will be held in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
“If you look at the players we have, I think we have what it takes to qualify for the AFCON next year. These are young and hungry players,” Ati-Zigi told Sporty FM.
The experienced goalkeeper is also hopeful that Ghana can make a strong impact if they reach the finals.
“I believe we can make a statement with what we have as a group at the AFCON next year,” he added.
The Black Stars are in Group C for the qualifiers, along with Ivory Coast, Gambia, and Somalia.
Ghana is eager to return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 AFCON, which ended one of the longest qualification streaks in African football.
Ati-Zigi’s comments come as the Ghana Football Association and the technical team continue their efforts to rebuild the national side following the World Cup setback and to assemble a squad capable of challenging for honors at the 2027 AFCON.
