South Korea kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in impressive fashion, coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in an entertaining Group A clash at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.
The Czech Republic seemed on course for a winning start when Ladislav Krejci scored in the 59th minute, netting the nation’s first World Cup goal since 2006.
However, South Korea responded and equalized eight minutes later through Feyenoord midfielder Hwang In-beom, who calmly finished to bring his side back into contention.
The Asians completed the turnaround late in the match when Hwang turned provider, delivering a precise cross that was expertly converted by Oh Hyeon-gyu to hand South Korea all three points.
The result gives the Tigers a strong start to their World Cup journey, while the Czech Republic were disappointed despite ending their long wait for a goal on football’s biggest stage.
South Korea’s victory follows Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa in the group’s opening fixture, placing the Koreans among the early frontrunners in Group A.
The Tigers will next face tournament hosts Mexico on June 19 in a crucial encounter, while the Czech Republic will attempt to get its campaign back on track against South Africa on June 18.
