Gyan names USA strike as his greatest World Cup goal

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has identified his extra-time winner against the United States national football team at the 2010 FIFA World Cup as his most treasured goal on the global stage.

Gyan delivered a decisive moment in South Africa, scoring in extra time to secure Ghana’s place in the quarter-finals after the match had ended 1-1 in regulation time.

In an interview with Channel One TV, the former captain reflected on key highlights from his World Cup career, including his historic strike against the Czech Republic national football team in 2006—Ghana’s first-ever goal at a World Cup.

“That goal will always be special because it was Ghana’s first at the World Cup, something everyone had been waiting for,” he said.

However, Gyan emphasized that his most memorable moment came four years later against the United States.

“I believe that was my best goal in the World Cup. The timing was perfect—it came in extra time when the game was level,” he explained.

“As a striker, it might not be the best goal I’ve ever scored technically, but considering the moment and what it meant, it stands out as my greatest on that stage.”

Gyan added that his personal favorite goal overall came against the England national football team, but maintained that the strike against the USA remains the standout among his six World Cup goals for Ghana.

The former Sunderland AFC and Al Ain FC forward remains Africa’s all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history, with six goals across three tournaments.
