Budget papers given to Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation show that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) set aside $408,800 for the Black Stars’ daily expenses during their month-long stay at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Furthermore, the GFA’s budget included $5.4 million for appearance fees and other suspect costs.
Here’s how the per diem budget was allocated:
The Technical Team (22 members) will be paid $150 per day for 28 days, for a total of $92,400.
Additional Budget Discrepancies
The budget includes essential costs—accommodation and meals—however, further examination shows some questionable items.
A major difference lies in the budget allocated to player airfare. Even though several Black Stars players arrived in Qatar before the tournament, the team’s charter flight is listed in the document as costing $300,000. It’s still a mystery why all players received reimbursement for airfare, when some were already present at the pre-tournament camp.
In addition, honorariums were given to the following officials:
The Head of Delegation is given $20,000, the General Secretary is allocated $15,000, the Administrator is also granted $15,000, the COVID Officer is awarded $20,000, and the National Teams Department Representative is provided $10,000.
The GFA’s spending, especially during World Cups, is under scrutiny due to the $14.18 million tournament budget and concerns about financial accountability and transparency.
With discussions about sports funding and national team costs continuing, these figures are expected to draw more attention to the Ghana Football Association’s use of public funds.
