George Afriyie declares his opposition to Kurt Okraku’s third GFA presidency

A former GFA vice president, George Afriyie, vehemently opposes GFA president Kurt Okraku’s pursuit of a third term.
Following his 2019 election loss to Okraku and disqualification from the 2023 race, Afriyie plans to challenge Okraku’s attempt to change GFA rules for a third term.
In an Asempa FM interview, Afriyie deflected responsibility for the FA President’s performance, stating that it was their responsibility alone.
Afriyie voiced his support for Okraku while resolutely rejecting any statute changes enabling a third term.
“I’m wholeheartedly committed to helping Kurt achieve his goals,” Afriyie stressed that while he expects the man to finish his term, any plans for a third term, particularly involving proposed changes, are unacceptable.
“Ghana’s government is the GFA’s main financial backer,” he added. The government has a stake in this,” Afriyie said.
Okraku’s time in office, beginning in 2019 after the Normalisation Committee replaced Kwesi Nyantakyi, has been marked by considerable criticism.
The Black Stars’ poor performance, including two early exits from the Africa Cup of Nations and missing next year’s tournament in Morocco for the first time in 20 years, increased the scrutiny.
Even with the setbacks, Okraku celebrated the Black Stars’ qualification to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Moreover, under his guidance, women’s football has made remarkable progress, culminating in the Black Queens qualifying for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations—their first appearance since 2018.
