Manchester United and Napoli have reached a £25.4m (€30m) deal for Scott McTominay, which could help them in their pursuit of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.
The deal includes an important sell-on clause, but it is contingent upon McTominay agreeing to personal terms with the Serie A club.
McTominay, who has scored 29 goals in 255 games for Manchester United, came off the bench for the final 11 minutes in their 2-1 loss to Brighton.
He is in the last year of his Old Trafford contract, and United can choose to extend it by 12 months.
The club’s attempt to sign Ugarte from PSG won’t completely hinge on a transfer, but it’s believed that if McTominay were to leave permanently, it would simplify matters.
Discussions between United and PSG about Ugarte are ongoing. Both clubs prefer a permanent transfer, but they are open to considering a loan with a mandatory purchase clause.
Napoli is considering pursuing Billy Gilmour, McTominay’s fellow Scotland international, and may need to make a sale to complete both deals.
In addition, the club is making efforts to secure Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, and Victor Osimhen could be involved in a different transaction.
