Stephen Appiah and fellow football icons unite to improve Korle Bu Hospital following personal tragedies

Stephen Appiah, former captain of the Black Stars, has opened up about the devastating experience of losing both parents at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

The football legend avoided returning due to the deteriorating conditions at the hospital during his father’s illness twelve years ago.

“12 years ago, my father was diagnosed with a stroke and was sent to Korle Bu. After visiting him twice, I decided not to go again because of the situation I encountered there,” he stated.

Unfortunately, his mother faced a similar destiny six years later, as her condition had worsened in the meantime. “My mother also had a stroke six years ago; we sent her to the same place. I was thinking by then things would have changed, but to my shock, things had worsened,” he recounted.

Appiah and other football icons, including Derek Boateng, Godwin Attram, Sam Johnson, Emmanuel Armah, and Awuley Quaye Jr., are partnering with the Ga Traditional Council to enhance the hospital’s facilities.

To mark Korle Bu’s 100th anniversary, they have plans to create a new round-the-clock pharmacy and update the existing buildings.

The group convened with Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II on Wednesday to discuss the project.
