The Minority in Parliament wants Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams removed from his position immediately over his alleged role in a World Cup visa controversy. They also say he should face prosecution if an investigation finds any wrongdoing.
This demand follows President John Mahama’s decision to suspend National Sports Authority Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah while investigations continue into an alleged $623,000 (£463,000) payment for visa facilitation.
At a parliamentary press conference on Wednesday, October 7, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Ranking Member of the Sports Committee, claimed that officials helped people who were not Sports Ministry employees get visas.
He said a letter was used to present these individuals as ministry employees to help with their visa applications.
Assafuah said these allegations mean Ghana’s travel plans for supporters and officials going to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States need a full review.
The Minority also wants the chief executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority to be dismissed because of his alleged involvement. They say investigators should prosecute him if they find he is responsible.
Assafuah argued that the investigation should include all officials involved in the visa process, not just the NSA director general.
The Minority wants investigators to find out who approved the spending, who benefited, and whether the correct procedures were followed.
Ghana reached the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
