Ghana captain Gideon Mensah admitted he played a part in the Black Stars’ 4-2 loss to The Gambia, saying the team struggled to make things work on Tuesday.
Mensah led Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium, where the team lost a two-goal lead and suffered their second straight defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
“Today was one of those days when nothing worked for us. As captain, I also take responsibility for the defeat,” Mensah said.
He made two costly mistakes: giving away the penalty that started The Gambia’s comeback and losing the ball before their third goal.
Mensah asked for patience with the team, which has changed a lot because several players left. He said new players need time to fit in.
“We can’t hide from the fact that there are so many new players in the team, and being a new player means mentality and a lot of things. These are things that don’t come overnight. It takes time for new players to get these things,” he said.
He also asked fans to notice the effort of those who chose to play for the country.
“We need to appreciate the players for not hiding and coming out to represent the nation after the withdrawals,” he added.
Ghana still has no points after two Group C matches. They also lost their first qualifier 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké.
