Gambia coach Jonathan McKinstry said he was not surprised by his team’s 4-2 win over the Black Stars in Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, thanks to his knowledge of Ghanaian football.
His team came from two goals behind at the Accra Sports Stadium to secure their second straight Group C victory.
Ghana took the lead with a penalty from Ernest Nuamah in the 27th minute, and Felix Afena-Gyan made it 2-0 with a free-kick six minutes later.
Muhammad Badamosi scored in the 37th minute to cut the deficit, and captain Omar Colley equalized five minutes later. Ebrima Colley came off the bench to score in the 68th and 91st minutes, sealing the comeback.
“I follow Ghana football very well, so to win 4-2 didn’t surprise me,” McKinstry said after the game.
McKinstry claimed his coaching staff had noticed tension among some Ghana players before the match, which they saw as a potential advantage.
“We noticed that a few of the Black Stars players were unhappy with each other. So we knew there was disruption in the team,” he said.
He also said that knowing Ghanaian football and its culture helped The Gambia prepare for the match.
The Scorpions now have six points from their first two qualifiers, while the Black Stars are still looking for their first point after two straight losses.
