The Black Stars are set to play a fifth international friendly as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After securing qualification for the tournament to be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Ghana Football Association had initially lined up four friendly matches under former head coach Otto Addo.
However, Addo’s tenure came to an abrupt end after March’s stinging setbacks: a 5-1 rout by Austria in Vienna and a narrow 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart.
After an extensive search, the GFA turned to Carlos Queiroz, handing him the reins on a short-term contract that will be evaluated after the World Cup.
With a wealth of experience from leading Iran, Portugal, and Egypt on the world stage, Queiroz is expected to instill greater structure and discipline as the team’s preparations ramp up.
Ghana’s warm-up schedule already features confirmed clashes with Mexico and Wales in May and June, but the GFA is eager to secure another friendly, convinced that extra preparation will give Queiroz the time he needs to embed his tactical vision.
Queiroz is set to touch down in Ghana this week for his official unveiling, accompanied by five members of his technical team. He will also meet the Minister for Sports, Kofi Adams.
Once unveiled, Queiroz will step straight into action, leading the Black Stars in their remaining friendlies, starting with the showdown against Mexico and culminating in the final test against Wales on June 2.
Ghana’s fifth World Cup adventure begins in Group L, where they will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and Croatia on June 27.
After early exits in 2014 and 2022, hopes are high that Queiroz can steady the ship and lead the Black Stars to a resurgent run on football’s grandest stage.
