Coach Richard Afoakwa turns down Hearts of Oak after renewing with Accra Lions

Accra Lions FC head coach Richard Afoakwa has turned down a tempting offer from Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak, choosing instead to write the next chapter of his story with the Division One League side by signing a fresh contract.

“It is about continuity and my belief in the project at Accra Lions. I have no doubt that this is the best environment for me to develop and grow,” Afoakwa said in an exclusive interview.

Hearts of Oak, eager to bolster their senior technical team and youth development ahead of the new season, had set their sights on the highly-rated coach.

The proposed move would have seen Afoakwa take on a dynamic dual role, serving as assistant coach for the senior team and leading the club’s youth side.

Afoakwa’s choice to stay delivers a significant lift to Accra Lions, who see him as the cornerstone of their long-term ambitions.

This renewed commitment speaks volumes about Afoakwa’s belief in the club’s vision and the unwavering trust Accra Lions place in his leadership as they gear up for the new campaign.

Afoakwa joined Accra Lions in August 2025 as assistant coach under James Francis after departing former Division One side Inter Allies FC.

Following Francis’s dismissal in January 2026, he was promoted to head coach and has since overseen the team’s development.

A graduate of the University of Cape Coast, Afoakwa holds a degree in Psychology and Education. He has also previously worked with WAFA and the now-defunct Nsoatreman FC.
