Ghana edged past the Central African Republic with a 1-0 win in their last group game at the ongoing U20 AFCON on Thursday.
With this win, Ghana is almost qualified for the continental championship in Chile this September.
Having missed the World Cup since 2015, the Black Satellites dominated the first half, creating several clear-cut chances but failing to score.
A great opportunity arose for Aziz Issah midway through the half; he bypassed C.A.R.’s defense but failed to direct his high shot towards the goal.
Black Satellites’ perseverance paid off seven minutes from the final whistle when Joseph Opoku scored past the C.A.R. goalkeeper after beating three defenders.
Ghana, currently leading Group C with seven points, will next play the third-place team from either Group A or B.
Currently, both in Group A, Zambia and Tunisia are in third place and will probably play Ghana.
Ghana’s Abdul Aziz Issah’s impressive performance against C.A.R.’s defense secured him the man of the match award.
“The game was tough, but a point was enough to win the group,” Aziz commented.
Ghana, winners of the 2009 U20 World Cup and four U20 AFCON titles, seeks a fifth championship.
