Ghana FA announces StarTimes’ league broadcast rights return

StarTimes, a Chinese pay-TV operator, will again show Ghana’s Premier League starting in February, the Ghana Football Association announced.
Following weeks of negotiations between the GFA and StarTimes, the deal signals StarTimes’ return to Ghanaian football. Last year, the company lost broadcasting rights because of financial disputes with the GFA.
StarTimes’s initial ten-year agreement for GPL broadcast rights, starting in 2016, was worth $17.9 million. However, problems within the partnership suspended its coverage, creating a gap in the league’s live broadcasts.
GFA Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo confirmed the news in a Guide FM interview. “The last time I spoke about StarTimes was four weeks ago. StarTimes is coming in February. Currently, the GFA isn’t under contract with any media outlet. To make our matches accessible despite lacking TV rights, we partnered with select companies for a limited period and also streamed them on our GFA app. “However, that’s no longer the case,” Sarfo said.
He explained, “Should StarTimes join by February, everything will cease, ending our access to the rights.”
This season’s Ghana Premier League games have aired on several channels, namely Metro TV, Original TV, Net2 TV, and AFA Sports.
