WORLD CUP 2026: Tuchel vents anger at Djed Spence over Thomas Partey issue

England manager Thomas Tuchel has dismissed suggestions that he singled out Djed Spence during the Three Lions’ goalless draw with Ghana, insisting his animated touchline instructions were purely tactical.

Spence, who made his first major tournament start after impressing off the bench against Croatia, received repeated instructions from Tuchel before being replaced by Nico O’Reilly in the second half.

The defender had also attracted attention before kickoff after declining to shake hands with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey during the pre-match formalities.

After the match, Tuchel explained that his instructions aimed to improve Spence’s attacking contribution rather than criticize his performance.

“I wanted him to be more involved in the attacking phase, to start our attacks a bit wider and make more runs beyond the last line,” Tuchel said.

“Overall, it was his first start for England in a major tournament, so we must keep everything in perspective. I have to shout because otherwise nobody hears me. Everything is fine with Djed.”

The England boss added that introducing O’Reilly almost paid dividends, with the substitute creating one of England’s best opportunities before Harry Kane missed a late chance.

Despite dominating possession, England could not break down a disciplined Ghana side. The match ended 0-0, leaving qualification from Group L to be decided in the final round of fixtures.
