Tunisia name Hervé Renard as new head coach until World Cup end

Tunisia has turned a new page by appointing French coach Hervé Renard as their head coach, stepping in after Sabri Lamouchi’s departure following the Carthage Eagles’ crushing 5-1 loss to Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation announced that the experienced tactician will take charge of the national team with immediate effect and will lead the side for the remainder of the tournament.

According to an official statement, the agreement also includes the option to negotiate a longer-term contract after the World Cup, subject to achieving specific objectives.

A press conference to formally introduce the 57-year-old has been scheduled for Tuesday at the team’s training base, shortly before the squad’s training session. Renard is expected to address the media for the first time since taking over the role.

Renard arrives with a treasure trove of international experience, having steered national teams across Africa and famously leading both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations glory.

The former Morocco and Saudi Arabia coach now shoulders the challenge of reigniting Tunisia’s World Cup dreams after their stinging opening defeat cast doubt over their qualification hopes.

His first assignment will be a crucial Group F clash against Japan on June 21, before Tunisia concludes their group-stage campaign against the Netherlands on June 25.

With two matches left and a knockout spot still up for grabs, Tunisian officials are counting on Renard’s experience and leadership to spark a revival and keep the nation’s World Cup hopes burning bright.
