Vozinha shines as Cape Verde stun Spain with a historic 0–0 draw in their Group H opener

Cape Verde showcased remarkable defensive grit in their 2026 FIFA World Cup debut, battling to a historic 0-0 draw against Spain in a dramatic Group H opener on Monday.

In their first-ever appearance on football’s grandest stage, Cape Verde drew inspiration from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose heroic performance left the tournament favorites searching for answers all night.

Spain commanded the ball and territory for much of the match, hemming Cape Verde into their own half and carving out chance after chance. Yet time and again, their efforts were thwarted by a mix of squandered opportunities and Vozinha’s inspired saves.

The breakthrough nearly came in the 39th minute when Ferran Torres unleashed a thunderous first-time shot that rattled the crossbar. The rebound landed perfectly for Mikel Oyarzabal, whose header seemed certain to score, only for Vozinha to pull off a breathtaking save and keep the match level.

Just before halftime, Vozinha was tested once more. Torres slipped free in the penalty area, but his shot went straight at the alert Cape Verde keeper, who made another vital save to deny Spain.

Spain’s relentless assault continued into first-half stoppage time as Aymeric Laporte soared above the defense from a corner, but his header lacked the force to trouble the ever-confident Vozinha.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spain relentlessly probing for a way through. In the 56th minute, Torres again found space in the box, but his header was spectacularly denied by Vozinha’s quick reflexes. The 73rd minute after a well-worked Spanish move, but his low strike was met by yet another excellent save from the 40-year-old shot-stopper.

Late in the game, Marc Cucurella tried his luck, but Vozinha remained unflappable, calmly collecting the shot to preserve his well-earned clean sheet.

Though Cape Verde spent most of the match on the back foot, they almost delivered a stunning twist in the 90th minute when Kevin Lenini fired a long-range shot that was blocked, sparking a rare and hopeful corner for the underdogs.

Spain turned to their star winger Lamine Yamal in the second half, hoping he could unlock the Cape Verde defense, but the determined newcomers stood their ground and held out until the final whistle.

Vozinha’s heroics made all the difference as Cape Verde claimed a memorable point against one of the tournament’s giants, etching a new chapter in the nation’s football story.

Both teams will now turn their attention to their remaining Group H fixtures. Spain and Cape Verde will face Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, respectively, as they continue their quest for a place in the knockout stages.
