Gyan highlights both confidence and pressure on Black Stars

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan notes a growing wave of confidence sweeping through Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as hopes for the national team soar ever higher.

Set to unfold across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament will mark Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance. After early exits in 2014 and 2022, Gyan senses a renewed hope among fans that the Black Stars are ready to shine brighter this year.

“Ghanaians are optimistic, but there is definitely pressure on the team back home,” Gyan told SuperSport.

The former Sunderland striker, still celebrated as Ghana’s all-time top scorer and Africa’s most prolific World Cup marksman, voiced his faith in the Black Stars and offered encouragement to Africa’s other hopefuls.

“We’ll see how things unfold, but I hope all the African teams perform well and make the continent proud,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are sharpening their skills in the United States ahead of a final warm-up clash with Jamaica on June 10.

Ghana finds itself in Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama. The four-time African champions will kick off their World Cup journey against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, then face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The Black Stars are determined to break through to the knockout stages for the first time since their unforgettable quarter-final adventure at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
