Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffuor has called on Ghanaians to unite behind incoming Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, urging patience and collective support as the team enters a new phase.
Queiroz will take over from Otto Addo, with his official unveiling expected later this week. The experienced tactician must revitalize the national team and guide Ghana to its fifth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His tenure will begin almost immediately. Preparatory friendlies against Mexico and Wales are scheduled ahead of the tournament. Ghana faces a difficult group featuring England, Croatia, and Panama.
Amid concerns over Queiroz’s defensive style, Kuffuor downplayed the criticism, arguing that Ghana has not been an attacking side in recent years and questioning the basis of such concerns.
“For me, it’s not about the coach. Have we been offensive in recent years?” he remarked.
Kuffuor emphasized that with the appointment finalized, attention should shift from debate to support. He warned that constant criticism could hinder progress at a crucial time.
“Whether we like it or not, he has been appointed, so we should give him the needed support. Criticism will not help,” he added.
The former Bayern Munich defender also highlighted the importance of unity among fans and stakeholders, stressing that collective backing will be vital for the team’s success.
He further advised Queiroz to assemble a strong technical team with deep knowledge of Ghanaian football, recommending the inclusion of individuals familiar with the local game and system.
“I would also advise him to work with people who understand Ghana football and have experienced it,” he noted.
As anticipation builds ahead of Queiroz’s unveiling, expectations remain high for the Black Stars. With the World Cup approaching, the coming weeks will be critical—and Kuffuor believes unity and support could play a decisive role in Ghana’s fortunes on the global stage.
