Police begin manhunt after Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong killed in highway robbery

The Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has launched a manhunt for suspected armed robbers following a deadly attack on the team bus of Berekum Chelsea, which claimed the life of player Dominic Frimpong at Ahyiresu.

Police said the attack happened on Sunday night around 10:30 pm along the Ahyiresu to Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District.

According to police, a VIP bus carrying about 30 players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum was ambushed by six armed men, three of them with pump-action guns. As the driver tried to get away, he lost control, and the bus ran off the road into the bush.

Frimpong was shot during the attack and taken to Bibiani Government Hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

Authorities said another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GH¢4,500. Investigators found two used BB cartridges at the scene as they continue their forensic work.

The Regional Police Command has sent more officers and crime scene experts to help find the suspects. Officials say those responsible will be caught and are asking residents to stay calm and help with the investigation.

The death of the 20-year-old footballer has deeply affected Ghana’s football community and led to new calls for better security to protect teams when they travel within the country.
