Bechem United surprised many by beating former champions FC Samartex 2-1 at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex in Samreboi on Sunday.
Samuel Okai and Yaw Annor scored in the first half for Bechem United, giving them the lead. Just before halftime, Akwasi Sarpong scored for Samartex to make it 2-1 after an exciting first 45 minutes.
Bechem United got a penalty in the 12th minute, but Kofi Tompuo missed the chance to score. Still, Bechem kept pressing, and Okai finally put them ahead with a good finish.
Five minutes later, Annor made it 2-0 for Bechem after a strong team play, putting Samartex under pressure. Samartex, known as the Timber Boys, answered just before halftime when Sarpong scored to lift their spirits.
In the second half, Samartex tried hard to equalize and came close, but Bechem’s defense stayed strong. Bechem kept their cool, defended well, and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Samartex, who have not won a match since January, kept searching for a way back into the game but could not break through Bechem United’s solid defense.
