Following a successful bid against Botswana at its Congress in Cameroon in June 2024, the CAA announced last week that the event for Africa’s top athletics players will be held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon from May 12-17, 2026.
Having already awarded the hosting rights to Ghana following bid success over Botswana at its Congress in Cameroon in June 2024, the CAA, last week, confirmed that the event for Africa’s top athletics stars, billed for the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, will run from May 12-17, 2026.
Ghana Athletics has embraced this opportunity, already setting plans in motion to guarantee a vibrant and well-organized continental athletics celebration, which will begin with a CAA Council meeting in Accra on May 10-11, 2026.
“Accra is ready to host the rest of Africa. We engaged the government before we went in for the bid, so we have the full government support through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,” a Vice-President of GA, Charles Osei Asibey, told the Graphic Sports.
“We have had a series of meetings with the Sports Minister, we have sent the budget to Cabinet, and the Chief of Staff has approved, so Ghana is ready for a world-class event. A lot of engagements are ongoing, as the GA Secretariat is working and preparing already,” he said.
A Local Organising Committee (LOC) will be inaugurated soon, ready to take charge of logistics, accommodation, transport, venue management, and all final touches for the continental tournament.
Ghana aims to build on the success of the Accra 2023 African Games, using that experience to elevate the Accra 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships.
Beyond showcasing Ghana’s renowned hospitality, athletics officials are determined to see the nation shine on the track and field as well.
“Ghana will not just host the African Championships; we hope to impress the world as well, in terms of performance,” Osei Asibey said.
“We have a standing team, but we are also working on the next generation of stars. So, definitely, our athletes will be ready,” he said.
