CAF Awards 2025: Hakimi and Chebbak were honored as African players of the year

Achraf Hakimi, the Paris Saint-Germain star and Moroccan Atlas Lion, won African Footballer of the Year at the CAF Awards in Rabat on Wednesday.
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) crowned Morocco right-back Achraf Hakimi the 2025 African Footballer of the Year at the Caf Awards in Rabat on a successful night for the host nation.
A panel of experts, including CAF members, African media, players, and coaches, chose the Moroccan international as the winner.

The PSG fullback’s victories in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1, and Coupe de France earned him the African title. Hakimi is the first Moroccan to win the award since 1998, when Mustapha Hadji did.
Achraf Hakimi is among the 30 contenders for the Globe Soccer’s Best Player of the Year 2025.
The Atlas Lions right-back won the 2025 Golden Lion Award after the Moroccan newspaper ‘Al Mountakhab’ conducted a vote that involved 57 media outlets. This is his second straight victory.
He’s aiming to recover from his Champions League ankle ligament injury sustained in the Bayern Munich game and be fit for the Atlas Lions at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Ghizlane Chebbak, captain of Morocco, won the women’s award. She is the inaugural Moroccan woman to receive the African Footballer of the Year award. The midfielder, 35, was the top scorer in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scoring a great goal in the final.
Chebbak was a reliable player for her club and nation in 2025. She also earned the top scorer title at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July; Morocco placed second to Nigeria.
The African Goalkeeper of the Year is Moroccan player Yassine Bounou. His countryman, Othmane Maamma, received the Men’s Young Player of the Year award. The Women’s Young Player of the Year title was once more given to Moroccan player Doha El Madani.
The committee named the Moroccan U-20 team Men’s National Team of the Year after their historic victory in Chile, where they were the first Arab and African team to win a World Cup in this division. Moroccan players took home six trophies, dominating this year’s CAF Awards.
