The Ghana Sports Writers Association (SWAG) denounces the violent and unlawful acts that disrupted the Asante Kotoko-Nsoatreman FC match on February 2nd, 2025.
The tragic events, including the death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong (“Pooley”), injuries, and property destruction, tarnished our game’s integrity.
Encouraging fair play and respect in Ghana’s football. The SWAG urged the GFA to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to bring perpetrators of violence to justice and issue lifetime bans to prevent further incidents.
Authorities believed this would strongly discourage hooliganism, thus ensuring safer soccer matches.
“Let’s work together—fans, players, coaches, administrators, and all stakeholders—to stamp out hooliganism and build a culture of peace, fair play, and respect within Ghana’s football”.
Meanwhile, the GFA has officially requested a full-scale investigation into the incident from the Ghana Police Service to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We urge law enforcement to use all resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those behind these heinous acts”.
The GFA Executive Committee also banned Nsoatreman FC from using their home ground, effective immediately, under Article 14(2) of the Premier League Regulations.
This action is taken while investigations continue to guarantee the safety of all stakeholders. The GFA has also instructed the Security Committee (led by DCOP Lydia Donkor and FA Prosecutors) to collect evidence (match reports and documents) on-site for the FA’s Disciplinary Committee to review.
