In a historic moment, former national captain Kwesi Appiah has become the first Ghanaian coach to lead another national team to victory over the Black Stars.
Appiah’s tactical prowess was showcased in his Sudanese side’s impressive 2-0 win on Tuesday, bringing them closer to qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In the 2005 African U-17 Championship final, the late Osam Duodu masterminded a victory for Gambia against Ghana, with David Duncan as the coach of the Black Starlets. Nonetheless, Appiah’s success signifies the inaugural occasion of a Ghanaian coach triumphing over the Black Stars.
In two different periods, Appiah served as the leader of the Black Stars, and he made history by becoming the first Ghanaian coach to take Ghana to the 2014 World Cup. Despite that, he was let go in 2019.
Appiah has managed to achieve remarkable success in Sudan, even in the face of political challenges. Sudan was in a dire situation when he took charge, but now they are on the verge of qualifying for AFCON for the first time since 2021. Moreover, they are currently ahead of Senegal in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
