Marseille signs Manchester United forward Greenwood

Marseille secured the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United until 2029 for a deal worth 31.6m euros (£26.6m).

Greenwood, 22, came up through United’s academy but hasn’t played for the Premier League club since January 2022. He spent last season on loan at Getafe.

He was no longer facing charges, including attempted rape and assault, as of February 2023.

The intention of the French club to sign Greenwood was met with criticism from the mayor of Marseille.

His competitive senior debut for United came in 2019 as a substitute against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

With 35 goals in 129 matches, he made his lone appearance for England in 2020.

United announced that Greenwood would depart the club in August 2023 following a mutual agreement and a six-month internal investigation into his behavior.

In the subsequent month, he joined Getafe in La Liga, scoring ten goals and creating six assists in 36 matches, thus revitalizing his career.

In addition to wishing Greenwood well on their website, United have also included a significant sell-on clause in their deal with Marseille.

Marseille and Sunderland will play a pre-season friendly on August 3 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade, as the Stadium of Light is undergoing renovations.

Greenwood, a Bradford native, could be playing in England for the first time since his arrest in January 2022, which was linked to online material.
