Malawi head coach Lovemore Fazili praised Ghana’s Black Queens after the Scorchers’ historic 2-1 win in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The win in Rabat sent Malawi to their first WAFCON semi-final, thanks to a second-half goal from Rose Kadzere. This victory also earned the Scorchers a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, their first time at the tournament.
Even while celebrating this big achievement, Fazili praised the Black Queens, noting their quality and how well the teams know each other.
Malawi played Ghana in two friendly matches before the tournament, which gave the Scorchers helpful insight before the knockout game.
After the match, Fazili said Ghana deserved a lot of respect for their experience and quality.
“Yeah, first of all, I think as a coach, together with my technical panel, I have to give respect to Ghana. And to be honest with you, we have played almost two friendly international matches with Ghana, last year and this year. So, respect to them.”
Ghana started well and took the lead with a goal from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah. Malawi fought back to tie the game and then completed a memorable comeback to reach the semi-finals.
The loss ended the Black Queens’ hopes of making the WAFCON semi-finals, but Ghana still has a chance to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the African play-off against Côte d’Ivoire.
Malawi will now focus on their semi-final match against Algeria as they continue their dream run in the tournament.
