Black Princesses rally to beat Uganda in World Cup qualifier

The Black Princesses came from behind in the second half to beat Uganda’s under-20 women’s team 2-1 in the first leg of their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier at Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Uganda took the lead in the 32nd minute, quieting the home fans and putting Ghana under pressure. The visitors kept their advantage until halftime, giving the Princesses work to do in the second half.

Ghana came out strong after the break and equalized in the 58th minute when substitute Priscilla Mensah scored with a header, setting off celebrations.

Ghana kept pressing for another goal, but Uganda’s goalkeeper made several important saves to keep her team in the game. Still, Ghana finally broke through late on.

In the 85th minute, Latifa Abesik scored after a perfect cross from Jessica Appiah, securing the win for Ghana.

Mensah almost added another goal late in the game, but she hit the woodwork twice.

This result gives Ghana a narrow lead going into the return leg in Uganda, with qualification still up for grabs.
