David Kotei (popularly known as Poison), the country’s first world champion, warns that Ghana’s boxing future is at risk, emphasizing the need for competent leadership.
In an interview with Graphic Sports in Accra, the ex-featherweight champion criticized the current administration, implying that they are either driven by personal motives or lack the required expertise and passion for the sport.
Kotei, widely known as D.K., Ghana’s first world champion, expressed profound disappointment with current affairs. He criticized the appointment of boxing leaders based on political connections instead of their expertise or dedication to the sport.
“A few individuals are in their positions due to political connections and lack the competence required,” he asserted.
He emphasized the crucial need for capable, enthusiastic, and well-informed individuals who are dedicated to leading Ghanaian boxers to world championships.
The sport requires dedicated individuals who possess expertise, passion, and knowledge to produce world champions, Poison noted.
Azumah Nelson’s promotions aside, he expressed disappointment in other leaders’ lack of commitment and enthusiasm lately.
“You only see Azumah Nelson, and during his promotion, you could see that something is happening; aside from that, nothing else. You can’t see any other dedicated person,” the boxing icon observed.
