WORLD CUP 2026: USA beat Australia to secure knockout spot

The United States booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over Australia in their Group D encounter at Lumen Field.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team delivered a composed and disciplined performance, securing their second consecutive win and becoming the second team to reach the knockout rounds after Mexico.

Although Australia were resilient for much of the match, the United States took an early lead when Socceroos defender Cameron Burgess scored an own goal in the 11th minute.

The own goal gave the United States control and allowed them to dictate the tempo against a determined Australian side.

The hosts doubled their lead just before halftime through Villarreal full-back Alexander Freeman, whose precise finish put the result beyond doubt.

Australia tried to respond after the break but were unable to break down a well-organized American defense, which remained solid throughout.

This victory secures the United States a place in the knockout stage and reinforces their status as early contenders in the tournament.

Despite the loss, Australia remain in contention for qualification following their opening win over Turkey. They will seek a positive result against Paraguay on June 26 to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

The United States will conclude its Group D campaign against Turkey on the same day, aiming to maintain its perfect record and carry momentum into the knockout stage.
