Ghana’s former GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, calls on the current leadership to ensure the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON after 20 years prompted his statement.
Ghana came last in Group F with three points from six matches. Nyantakyi urges the GFA to secure the Black Stars’ World Cup qualification before the qualifiers resume in March.
Highlighting the significance of the upcoming World Cup, he stated that the 2026 tournament is crucial for Ghanaians, and failure to qualify would result in public outrage against the GFA, as he told Asempa FM.
Nyantakyi also highlighted to the GFA the tournament’s historical significance; the last time the U.S. hosted was in 1994, when Ghana again failed to qualify.
He insisted on the GFA and the government working together to achieve the team’s success.
“The last time America hosted the World Cup was in 1994, and Ghana did not qualify, so the GFA and government should do everything possible to ensure the Black Stars qualify,” he added.
Chad and Madagascar are the Black Stars’ remaining qualifying opponents. With 9 points from four matches, Ghana shares second place with Comoros, the group leader.
