Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz says he is ready to resign if leaving his position would fix Ghana’s football problems after the team’s 4-2 loss to The Gambia.
Queiroz made this comment after Ghana gave up a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, resulting in their second straight loss in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars seemed in control after taking a 2-0 lead, but The Gambia came back to win, leaving Ghana without a win in their first two Group C matches.
This result has increased pressure on Queiroz, who returned for a second time to help Ghana reach next year’s tournament after missing out on the 2025 AFCON.
When asked about his future after the loss, the Portuguese coach said he would accept the Ghana Football Association’s decision if they thought his leaving would help.
“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” Queiroz said during his post-match press conference.
Ghana are now at the bottom of Group C with no points, after also losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in their first qualifier in Bouaké.
The Black Stars now have a tougher path to qualify and need to bounce back quickly in their next games to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 AFCON alive.
Queiroz’s comments are likely to increase speculation about his future as the GFA reviews the team’s poor start to the qualifiers.
