Coach Otto Addo named Leicester City’s Jordan Ayew as captain for Ghana’s final AFCON qualifier matches.
The Black Stars will conclude their qualifiers next week, facing Angola, who are already qualified, and Niger, who are at the bottom of the table.
Ghana will travel to Luanda to play the Palancas Negras on November 15th, then return home to host Niger in Accra on November 18th, 2024.
Head coach Otto Addo has confirmed Jordan Ayew as his captain for the upcoming games in the absence of Andre Ayew and Thomas Partey.
Their performance during the October international break hurt Ghana’s chances of qualification, where Otto Addo captained the team with West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus in their games against Sudan.
Addo’s decision to make the West Ham player captain instead of Jordan drew intense criticism.
Following a recent meeting in Leicester, Otto Addo resolved minor disagreements and chose Ayew to lead the Black Stars in the next games.
The Black Stars’ disappointing qualifying results have put them in danger of missing the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.
Ghana has struggled in AFCON qualifications, losing two matches and drawing two more after playing four games. With only two points, they occupy third place on the standings entering the final round of games this month.
The Black Stars’ path to the next year’s Morocco tournament requires victories over Angola and Niger, while they also depend on Sudan to stumble against those same opponents.
