StarTimes partially pays GFA $800,000 broadcast debt

StarTimes Ghana is addressing its outstanding debt to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), initiating payments for over $800,000 related to past Ghana Premier League broadcast rights.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Eli Kondoh, the company’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed this.
The GFA and StarTimes’ broadcasting agreement, which lasted five years, concluded before the previous league season. When the contract wasn’t renewed, AFA TV and Globe TV replaced the broadcaster for local TV coverage.
Despite reports of continued talks throughout the season, the GFA declared in May that negotiations had failed.
StarTimes’ inability to pay the outstanding balance of a 2020 agreement for $5.25 million caused the breakdown in negotiations, the football association stated.
Kondoh revealed that a portion of the debt has recently been settled.
Kondoh explained that a debt exceeding five million dollars, reduced to just over eight hundred thousand after a substantial payment, indicates significant project spending.
“Just a few weeks ago, some amount of that outstanding balance has already been paid. So it means that StarTimes remains committed to the project of building Ghana football. “So yes, it started very well. It didn’t end badly either, and those outstanding amounts will also be cleared.”
Despite failed renewal talks, Kondoh stated that StarTimes is still willing to be a GFA broadcast partner again.
“It might not be specifically the Ghana Premier League—or maybe just an aspect of the league—but there are talks ongoing. It could be production.
“We’re still in talks, and we will give viewers full details of any new terms once everything is confirmed.”
