RB Salzburg sack Pep Lijnders before Jürgen Klopp role begins

Liverpool’s ex-assistant manager, Pep Lijnders, is no longer RB Salzburg’s head coach, having been let go due to underwhelming results.

He spent nine years as an assistant at Anfield (under Brendan Rodgers and Jürgen Klopp) before joining Salzburg at age 41 this past summer.

Lijnders’ Liverpool career included Premier League and Champions League victories, contrasting sharply with his current struggles at Red Bull Arena. Ten points behind leaders SK Sturm Graz, Austria’s 17-time champions occupy fifth place in the Austrian Bundesliga.

This season, Salzburg are struggling in the Champions League, sitting 32nd out of 36 teams after winning just one of their six European games.

The club announced his exit on Monday, shortly before Klopp, Lijnders’ friend and former colleague, begins his new role as Red Bull’s head of global soccer.

Salzburg’s CEO Stephan Reiter and Sporting Director Rouven Schröder released a joint statement, saying: “We’ve recently begun our planned analysis of what’s been a disappointing season.” It was clear to see that in many of our matches we have been far short of our own requirements and aims.”
