Desmond Ofei has expressed unwavering confidence that Ghana’s U-23 side will secure qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, insisting the Black Meteors are ready to end their long absence from the global showpiece.
The Black Meteors are preparing to take on Libya in the second round of the African qualifiers as they bid to reach the men’s Olympic football tournament for the first time since 2004.
Speaking after watching Hearts of Oak’s victory over Basake Holy Stars at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, Ofei left no doubt about his belief in the team’s chances.
“I am 100 per cent convinced that we will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games,” he said.
The Ghana U-23 coach believes the combination of careful preparation and a highly motivated squad gives the country a strong opportunity to return to the Olympics after more than two decades away.
“I believe we can qualify because the time is right. It has been too long, and we are preparing well. The boys are hungry to show the nation the talent we have in this country and prove that Ghana remains one of the best football nations in Africa,” Ofei added.
The former Right to Dream coach also stressed that his side will do everything possible to overcome Libya and keep their qualification campaign on track.
“We will do everything within our power to beat Libya. Then in March, whoever we face next, we will be ready for the challenge,” he said.
Ghana are scheduled to travel to Libya for the first leg of the second-round qualifier during the November 9-17 international window, before hosting the return leg on home soil.
The Black Meteors are seeking to end a 24-year wait for Olympic football, having last appeared at the Games during the 2004 edition in Athens.
