To support Medeama SC’s CAF Champions League campaign, President John Mahama has announced a cash package worth GH¢342,000 (US$30,000) for the club.
After clinching the Ghana Premier League title last season and earning a spot in Africa’s top club competition, Medeama has captured the hearts and backing of fans across Ghana.
In the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, the Tarkwa-based team is currently up against TP Mazembe.
Medeama was defeated by the champions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo by a score of 1-0 in the first leg of the match, which took place on Sunday at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa.
Despite the defeat, Medeama remains optimistic that they can close the gap when the two teams meet again in Lubumbashi for the return leg.
To keep their chances of advancing to the next round, the Ghanaian champions will need to win in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
During a courtesy call on President Mahama, Medeama, Nations FC, the team that won the MTN FA Cup, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the team that won the Women’s Premier League, announced that they would provide financial support.
The government intends to assist the three clubs so they can compete well in continental events where Ghana is represented.
Determined to overturn the 1-0 deficit and keep their CAF Champions League dreams alive, Medeama now turns their attention to the crucial second leg against TP Mazembe.
