Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has shared that the search for the Black Stars’ next head coach is almost over, with the appointment now “99%” complete. Fans can expect an official announcement before the team reunites for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars are currently without a confirmed head coach following the expiration of Carlos Queiroz’s short-term contract in August.
Queiroz’s future had been uncertain for several weeks. In July, the Portuguese tactician released a statement widely interpreted as signaling his departure, although it later emerged that he had not officially left his position.
His contract subsequently expired in August, with reports suggesting that negotiations over a possible extension had stalled due to demands the government and the GFA were unable to meet.
Okraku now signals that Ghana is on the verge of securing the coach who will guide the Black Stars into their next chapter.
“Ghana will have a coach before we regroup. The coach who will lead the Black Stars is 99% of the way there. The coach who will lead the Black Stars is already working,” Okraku told 3Sports.
According to the GFA president, only the final contractual formalities remain before the appointment can be officially confirmed.
“We are just at that last line where we have to sign papers and formalize the relationship. We have a machinery in place; we are working,” he added.
Okraku, however, stopped short of revealing the coach’s identity or confirming whether Queiroz remains under consideration.
With the Portuguese coach’s contract now expired and talks reportedly stalled, signs point to the GFA charting a fresh technical course for the Black Stars.
Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has also been mentioned as a potential interim option should the GFA fail to finalize a permanent appointment before the next international window.
This decision arrives at a pivotal moment, as Ghana prepares to kick off their 2027 AFCON qualifying journey against Ivory Coast in September.
The four-time African champions are eager to make a powerful comeback after missing out on the last Africa Cup of Nations, their first absence from the tournament since 2004.
With another crucial qualification campaign on the horizon, the GFA is keen to settle the coaching question and restore stability for the Black Stars as they gear up for their return to the spotlight.
