Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of Senegal’s senior national team after the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) unanimously approved his nomination.
The decision was made by the FSF Emergency Committee during an extraordinary meeting held via videoconference on Monday, August 17, 2026.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the federation confirmed that all statutory members of the Emergency Committee participated in the meeting, with the exception of sixth vice-president Cheikh Ahmet Tidiane Seck, whose absence was formally excused.
Following deliberations, the committee unanimously endorsed Vieira as the new head coach of the Teranga Lions. The FSF described the appointment as part of its ambition to establish a high-level technical structure capable of matching Senegal’s sporting objectives.
Vieira brings extensive experience from his distinguished playing career and subsequent management roles. As a former France international, he contributed to the 1998 FIFA World Cup victory and played for clubs such as Arsenal and Inter Milan, where he was recognized for his leadership and skill.
Vieira’s appointment marks a new phase for Senegal following Pape Thiaw’s departure, as the team seeks to recover from their 2026 FIFA World Cup disappointment and renew their competitive spirit.
Vieira is tasked with rebuilding the national team, restoring confidence, and maintaining Senegal’s position among Africa’s leading football nations.
The FSF confirmed that discussions regarding the administrative and contractual details of Vieira’s appointment are still ongoing. The federation said the date of his official presentation and further details surrounding his installation will be announced later.
The announcement, dated August 18, 2026 and signed by the federation’s secretary-general in Dakar, formally confirms Vieira as the new head coach of the Teranga Lions.
One of Vieira’s immediate priorities will be overseeing the team’s transition following their World Cup disappointment while preparing the squad for upcoming international assignments.
The 1998 World Cup winner will also be expected to build on Senegal’s success in recent years and keep the Teranga Lions competitive among Africa’s elite.
Although the FSF has yet to disclose the full terms of Vieira’s contract, reports suggest the former France captain could earn between €35,000 and €45,000 per month on a proposed four-year deal.
