WORLD CUP 2026: Benjamin Asare makes history with a clean sheet on World Cup debut

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare became the first Ghanaian goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut, securing his place in Ghanaian football history.

The achievement came during Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BMO Field in Toronto.

In his first World Cup appearance, Asare delivered a composed performance, helping the Black Stars secure all three points and start their campaign with a win.

His clean sheet distinguishes him from all previous Ghanaian goalkeepers on their World Cup debuts.

Richard Kingson, Adam Kwarasey, Fatau Dauda, and Lawrence Ati-Zigi all conceded on their World Cup debuts, making Asare the first Ghanaian goalkeeper to begin his tournament career without conceding a goal.

This achievement marks another significant milestone in Asare’s rapid progress over the past year.

After a strong debut, Asare will aim to build on his performance when Ghana faces England in their next Group L match at Gillette Stadium on June 23.
