Algeria edged past Burkina Faso with a 1-0 victory, clinching their place in the AFCON round of 16

Algeria qualified for the 2025 AFCON’s Round of 16 thanks to Mahrez’s penalty, which earned them three points.

Algeria solidified its Group E lead with six points after two victories. Burkina Faso remains in second place with three points, tied with Sudan, which beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0.

Algeria had to substitute Juan Hadjam after 13 minutes due to an injury from a challenge.

Burkina Faso’s physicality led to a penalty after a foul by Ismahila Ouedraogo on Rayan Aït-Nouri in the box during the 23rd minute, resulting in a penalty. Mahrez calmly converted, giving Les Fennecs an early lead.

Mohamed Amoura’s close-range shot, assisted by Mahrez, was saved by the keeper, preventing Algeria from having a two-goal lead at halftime.

The second half saw Vladimir Petković’s team continue at the same rate, fashioning several chances they couldn’t capitalize on. The Burkinabe keeper, Kouakou Koffi, stopped Ibrahim Maza and Aït-Nouri from scoring despite their clear opportunities.

Burkina Faso also threatened, and Georgi Minoungou came closest with a curling shot. The effort narrowly missed clearing the bar. Algeria remained disciplined, despite more attempts to equalize.

Equatorial Guinea has been eliminated; Algeria will play them, and Burkina Faso will battle Sudan to advance, both matches on New Year’s Eve.
