Mohamed Aboutrika accuses CAF of favoring European interests during AFCON cycle shift

Egyptian icon Mohamed Aboutrika criticized the Confederation of African Football’s choice to adjust the Africa Cup of Nations cycle.

Aboutrika argued that African football is increasingly catering to European priorities, expressing skepticism about how much CAF truly values its own premier tournament.

“The African Football Federation in the service of European football. And this is what happens when you don’t realise your true value and status. The loser of the thing does not give,” Aboutrika said.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe announced Saturday that AFCON would move to a four-year cycle starting in 2028, ending the biennial format that began in 1968, save for a year-long break from 2012 to 2013.

The existing format will remain in place until the 2027 East Africa tournament, when the schedule will be updated. CAF has also declared its intention to launch an African Nations League, scheduled to be held yearly starting in 2029.

The decision has sparked heated debate across Africa, with opinions divided over whether the change will uplift African football or simply benefit European clubs, who have often complained about AFCON’s timing.
