Manchester City sign AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders for €55m

Manchester City has begun its planned summer spending spree by agreeing a fee with AC Milan for Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. A five-year contract has been agreed with the 26-year-old, costing €55m (£46.3m).
He’s the first signing in a series Khaldoon al-Mubarak, the club chair, promised before City’s Club World Cup participation. FIFA’s new competition has a special transfer window.

Primarily an attacking midfielder, Reijnders shone in an otherwise underwhelming season for Milan, netting 15 goals. The 2024-25 champion, Manchester City, is undergoing a rapid transformation, building a completely different team following Kevin De Bruyne’s departure and the expected exits of several other players, possibly including Jack Grealish. Rayan Aït-Nouri, the Wolves full-back, is reportedly connected to them.

“We already started that rebuild of this team in January,” Khaldoon said in a club interview last week. “We have clearly identified who exactly the targets are and in what positions, and we have our clear number one option, our clear number two option. Our objective is to try to be ready with the new squad for the Club World Cup.”
City spent around £180m on new signings in the January window, including Abdukodir Khusanov, Omar Marmoush, and others.

Despite City’s demanding US tour and upcoming season, Guardiola wants a smaller team. He explained last month that it’s difficult to manage 24 players since he usually leaves 4-6 players out of games, who then remain in Manchester. This won’t happen. “I don’t want that,” I told the club.
The rumored transfer of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool reportedly fell through, allegedly due to the high cost.
“The clubs are still in talks. For me, it’s wait and see now,” Reijnders told Voetbal International. “The Premier League is a great league, you dream of that as a little boy.”
