The newly appointed coach of the USA, Mauricio Pochettino, is determined to win the World Cup, taking motivation from the country’s women’s team and their esteemed coach, Emma Hayes.
The men’s team manager was announced on Tuesday as the former Tottenham and Chelsea boss.
The United States reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2002, but they have never won the tournament.
Pochettino believes his players should feel confident about winning the tournament, with the USA co-hosting the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
“We need to believe in big things that we can win, not only a game, but the World Cup,” he said.
“If we don’t, the journey will be difficult. We have to think big. That is the only way to put your talent in the service of the team. It is a massive challenge.”
Hayes has been appointed manager of the USA women’s team, which won the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
After an incredibly successful stint at Chelsea, winning the Women’s Super League seven times, the 47-year-old assumed the position.
Hayes achieved gold-medal success for the USA at the Olympic Games in Paris last month.
Hayes and Pochettino were both at Chelsea in the 2023-24 season, and he highly praised her coaching skills.
“In Emma, we have the best coach in the world,” he added.
“The women’s team has won everything. We need to match them. They need to be our inspiration, not only with results but also in the way they create the philosophy to defend the country, the badge, and the culture.
“We want to create something special.”
