Asante Kotoko rallied to secure a vital draw against defending champions Samartex in a thrilling match at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Saturday.
The Porcupine Warriors’ top league spot remained secure following a 1-1 draw, although it’s tenuous with competitors a single point adrift.
Dramani Awuah’s powerful low drive in the 39th minute gave Samartex the lead, leaving Kotoko’s goalkeeper helpless. Driven by a desire for revenge after a 1-0 loss to Kotoko earlier this season, the home team controlled the first half, mainly preventing their opponents from attacking.
Kotoko’s resilience and attacking intent strengthened them in the second half. Thanks to their efforts, a well-executed goal by the impressive Kwame Opoku tied the game. Having been deadly in front of goal during the second halves of matches this season, the forward netted again, thinking he’d secured a Kotoko victory. However, an offside call overturned his second goal, meaning he didn’t get a brace.
A hard-fought game saw both sides demonstrate impressive attacking flair and resolute defending. Samartex, in a title-defending push, launched a late offensive for a victory, but Kotoko’s strong defense secured a valuable draw.
