The Ministry of Youth and Sports has urgently requested the GFA to seek CAF inspection for two Accra stadiums as potential alternative venues for future international matches. This request underscores the critical need for immediate action.
CAF decided to revoke the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi’s Category 3 status due to concerns about the pitch’s poor condition.
In a statement on September 12, 2024, the Ministry emphasized the importance of CAF inspecting both the Accra Sports Stadium and the recently constructed University of Ghana Stadium. The suitability of these venues for hosting the Black Stars’ next international fixture in October is currently under consideration for Category 3 match approval.
CAF withdrew its approval of the Baba Yara Stadium after a post-inspection revealed a deteriorating pitch following the September 2024 AFCON Qualifier between Ghana and Angola. The playing surface, which showed inadequate grass cover, poor drainage, and uneven surfaces, was considered unsuitable for international matches.
The Ministry has assigned the National Sports Authority (NSA) the responsibility of handling the pitch concerns at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Meanwhile, the MOYS has shifted its focus to ensuring alternative venues meet the necessary standards. The majority of the issues raised during the CAF inspection of Accra Sports Stadium have since undergone significant improvement. Despite hosting CAF Category 2 matches, the University of Ghana Stadium has not yet undergone assessment for Category 3 certification.
After inspection, the Ministry reassured that both stadiums would meet the required standards and reiterated its unwavering dedication to improving the country’s sports infrastructure. This commitment is a testament to the Ministry’s vision for a thriving sports culture in Ghana.
CAF has called on Ghanaian authorities to carry out extensive renovations at major stadiums to meet technical requirements for international competitions.
