Tony Yeboah, the former Ghana international, was seen as a hero in his hometown of Hamburg. Daniel Krull, the German Ambassador to Ghana, remembers watching him play in the Bundesliga as a child.

Yeboah embarked on a career in Germany in the early nineties, leaving an indelible mark on German football. While playing for Eintracht Frankfurt, he clinched two Bundesliga Golden Boot titles, a testament to his exceptional skills.

Before joining Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, he had a stint with Hamburger SV in Europe.

The Ghana Embassy organized a special watch party to honor Germany’s hosting of the 2024 European Championship. This event was not just a celebration of football but a platform for the ambassador to share his fond memories of Yeboah, further strengthening the Ghana-Germany football bond.

“Growing up, I had the privilege of knowing Anthony Yeboah, who remains popular in Frankfurt and my hometown, Hamburg. His heroism was solidified when he won the Golden Boot not once, but twice”. He shared with TV3 that it marked his first experience with Ghanaian soccer.

Ambassador Krull believes Ghana is blessed with so much talent but needs to improve the country’s sports infrastructure.

“In my opinion, several highly successful soccer players have excelled on the global stage and can help advance our country.”
