Nigeria hires former Mali coach Chelle

Former Mali coach Eric Chelle is Nigeria’s new men’s national team coach.
Augustine Eguavoen, interim manager, oversaw the Super Eagles’ successful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Chelle, a 47-year-old former Mali international, managed the Eagles for over two years before his dismissal last June.
A quarter-final exit in the 2023 Afcon awaited West Africa last year, losing to the eventual winners, Ivory Coast, after extra time.
Nigeria’s second-place finish came under Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired after the tournament, ending his tenure as coach.
According to the NFF, Chelle’s responsibility will be to get the Super Eagles into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The three-time continental champions have drawn three times in Group C in their first four World Cup qualifying matches.
Four points behind Rwanda, the Super Eagles travel to Kigali to play Rwanda, then host Zimbabwe in March.
Only group winners are assured a place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada finals.
The length of Chelle’s contract remains undisclosed by the NFF.
